DVA Dental Care at Absolute Dental
Absolute Dental welcomes eligible Department of Veterans’ Affairs card holders at our West Perth practice. If you hold a Veteran Card – All Conditions or a Veteran Card – Specific Conditions, our team can help you understand how DVA dental arrangements may apply to clinically needed dental treatment.
DVA dental cover is not the same as a private health fund. Eligibility, treatment limits, prior approval requirements and any possible co-payment depend on your card type, accepted conditions, clinical need and DVA’s current rules.
Support for Eligible Veteran Card Holders
DVA may fund a range of dental services for eligible card holders, including check-ups, cleaning, treatment for cavities, dental injuries or conditions, crowns where clinically required, and dentures. Your dentist will assess your oral health and discuss suitable treatment options before care begins.
In many cases, eligible treatment under DVA arrangements may not require direct payment from the patient when the provider accepts the card. Some higher-cost items, treatment plans or services outside standard limits may need prior approval or may be subject to a biennial monetary limit.
Using Your DVA Card for Dental Care
Book and mention your DVA card
Contact Absolute Dental to book an appointment and let our team know that you would like to use a DVA Veteran Card. This helps us prepare the right information before your visit.
Bring your Veteran Card details
Please bring your physical or digital Veteran Card to your appointment. If you hold a Veteran Card - Specific Conditions, it can also help to bring information about the accepted conditions covered by your card.
Have your dental assessment
Your dentist will assess your teeth, gums and mouth, then discuss clinically suitable treatment options. The recommended care will depend on your oral health needs, not only on the type of card you hold.
Confirm cover before care starts
Our team can check whether your card can be accepted for the proposed treatment and whether DVA prior approval is needed. Some services can be provided without prior approval, while others must be approved before care starts.
Proceed once approvals are clear
Once eligibility, cover and any approval requirements are confirmed, your treatment can be planned. If any limit, approval condition or possible co-payment applies, our team will discuss this with you before you decide whether to proceed.
How DVA Dental Arrangements Work
DVA provides dental services for eligible Veteran Card holders through approved public and private providers. For dental care to be funded under DVA arrangements, the treatment must meet a clinical need and fit within the rules that apply to the card holder and the treatment item.
A Veteran Card – All Conditions, often known as a Gold Card, may support clinically needed dental treatment for all conditions within Australia. A Veteran Card – Specific Conditions, often known as a White Card, generally supports treatment for accepted service-related conditions. The provider may need to confirm eligibility or seek prior approval from DVA for some services.
Who May Be Eligible for DVA Dental Care?
You may be able to receive DVA-funded dental care if you have an assessed clinical need and hold a Veteran Card – All Conditions, or if you hold a Veteran Card – Specific Conditions and the dental treatment relates to an accepted service-related condition.
DVA rules can differ depending on card type, accepted conditions, treatment category and whether the provider accepts DVA arrangements. If you are unsure what your card covers, you can check with DVA before booking or bring your card details so our team can help point you in the right direction.
Costs, Limits and Approval Checks
For many eligible dental services, DVA pays the provider directly according to DVA arrangements. However, some high-cost items are subject to a Biennial Monetary Limit. DVA currently lists this limit as $5,980.30 over two calendar years, indexed, for certain Schedule C items such as some bridges and crowns.
Some treatments require prior financial authorisation before they can be claimed, including all dental implant treatment, certain higher-cost services, unlisted services and treatment that falls outside some quantity or time limits. Treatment should not begin under DVA arrangements until required approval has been confirmed.
